I agree that I definitely like to be able to zoom in close. As a game designer I love to be able to see the model/texture work close-up.

Can't the issue with the camera getting stuck in things be averted by just fading out objects that the camera is within a certain radius to? Like, suppose if it's in an ogre's head (which I would never want to be in) the ogre's head would just be faded to a 0 alpha, or moved a little in front of it etc.
