Hah, so true. I've played so many games with a large disadvantage because I refused to follow a religion and gain it's bonuses on principle :P.

There is a mod for civ4 called fall from heaven and there is a race ( the grigori) made up of people who were shunned by religons and they got a new victory condition i think along with some other advantages but cant follow a religon
