Default Fantasy Friday XXV - Healing Services and Training Grounds

FANTASY FRIDAY XXV
Healing Services and Training Grounds

It's Friday, and I think you know what that means! Welcome to Fantasy Friday XXV, the first of several showcases planned to announce new features to Dawn of Fantasy. It will be an exciting next couple of months and I think Reverie is just as excited to show you all of the new features we have been implementing as you are to see them. We've got new NPC interaction, dragon mercenaries, dwarven caves, beautiful new towns and harbors, a new unit GUI on its way, and of course, the brand new single-player game mode we've been hinting at. All will be revealed shortly.

So today we will be taking a first look into two new forms of NPC (Non-Player Character) interaction - Healing Services and Training Grounds. You may remember the other NPCs you can interact with from the previous Fantasy Fridays - the Mercenary and Goods Merchants in FFII and the Harbor Masters seen in FFXX. To add to this mix, you will find a Healer unit and a Trainer unit in, or in the proximity of, each of the main NPC strongholds. When entering a new town from the World Map, you can head directly to one of these NPCs, or you can explore the town on your own.

The Human Surgeon, the Orc Witch Doctor, and the Elven Spring Warden are the three healer NPC units you'll encounter in the Online Kingdom mode. They are located in hospitals or elven healing springs in each of the major towns and some of the smaller towns. For a small fee in gold, these units will heal the troops in your army immediately and replenish battalion numbers. As discussed in the homeland and unit showcases, this is not the only way to heal your troops, but it may be the fastest and most efficient. All units auto-heal over a long period of time and your homeland will have some type of Healing Spring or Well that you can take your troops to if they are near that region. A few troops can also heal themselves through special abilities at the cost of Fatigue and some rare units will be able to heal nearby troops, but both of these abilities will quickly drain Fatigue, making them unsuitable for a large army.

For the Training Ground, the MMORTS Trainer NPC units include the human Drill Sergeant, the Orc Pit Boss, and the Elven Weapons Master (names subject to change). As the name implies, these units will train your battalions, leveling them up for a small fee in gold. Of course, your primary means of leveling will be through battle and it will be pretty easy to reach the first couple of levels. But if you want to boost your chances before a big battle, it might be worthwhile to use a Trainer to level some battalions up so you can spend their new skill points prior to the battle and focus strictly on micromanagement tactics during the actual battle.

Thanks to Brian Shingles for the screenshots who took them while implementing the new services into the NPC towns.

Fierce greetings?
Yeah, apart from that: nice. All sounds quite useful.
I'm looking forward to the SP showcase.

Nice update, really nice

Although the healer sound kind of overpowered, but that will turn out ok somehow.

Might have better name for Elven Weapon Master.
How about Warden Instructor, or Warden Tutor?

Very interesting. It was mentioned previously that when units are lost and replaced in battalions their experience is adjusted accordingly for the new recruits. Will there be any way of reviving units, or is healing the wounded the sole path of survival in this existence?

In any case I like the idea of the unit trainers, it adds an aspect to role play on and seems a nice way to start new units along.

Finally. I always wanted to see training used in a game. Glad to know it's being implemented now and I haven't missed seeing those icons before from being dense. Full speed ahead.
