If you don't have a book to read, until the books arrive, huh, read on the net, for example the forgotten realms wiki.

I quite enjoy a song of ice and fire, a novel that takes a much darker approach to fantasy. The good guys can and do die, so far not a single installment in the series has had what I could quality as a 'happy ending' which is refreshing, if morbid. Also the political intrigue is fascinating, ranging from betrayal on the field of battle, assassinations, murder, political hostages and lastly everyone laying claim to the same throne and insisting only they have the right to rule for various sometimes ridiculous, sometimes quite convincing reasons.
As was suggested as well, the forgotten realms has some very well written books for it. If you're looking for something a little more sci-fi instead of fantasy the Foundation series are very good, Issac Asimov. And if you want something more humor than serious but still with an interesting story anything by Terry Pratchett is a good read.

It really depends on what you like. There is also Alvin Toffler who has some good books about lets say social matters. He also says a good thing, or maybe it is a human thing: "Society needs people who take care of the elderly and who know how to be compassionate and honest. Society needs people who work in hospitals. Society needs all kinds of skills that are not just cognitive; they're emotional, they're affectional. You can't run the society on data and computers alone."

The best books I've read in the last couple of months:
Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad A Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess Norwegian Wood - Haruki Murakami The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath That is, if you want non-scifi, which I doubt!
