Player funded game development?

So was reading about the net, And saw a few things involving this, Though all be it i have not read to much into it at this point, Was curious if anyone else has more info?

The concept is quite awesome to be fair, i mean If you set up with a player created concept and then slowly build on it to create a game which is in turn funded partly by player donations for the game of their dreams that would be pretty damn epic dont you think?

I think Obsidian Entertainment is reading about it or something from the twitter feed, An getting their community members opinions.

I suppose its a bit shakey though, i mean there will be days when funding is low or when funding is high, as donations can go up and down. Although i suppose with no deadline (Or publisher i guess for that matter, I suppose the developer can publish it itself? I know little about this so forgive me if im wrong) you can take it slow and pause development when funding isnt sufficiant and resume again when it is back up.

What do you guys n gals think on this anyway?
