Dawn of Fantasy Time Capsule

Not many games can say they've been ten years in the making. But Dawn of Fantasy isn't your average game, now is it? With a global release later this summer, we thought we'd take some time to look back and see how Dawn of Fantasy has changed over times, from the humblest of beginnings to where it is now. Join us, as we travel back to the very beginning.

2001/2002 - Humble Beginnings


Yes, Mythador did actually start off as SmileyFace Factory world as the future DOF programmers played around with what they could create! In late 2001/early 2002, a group of Age of Empires modders got together for a fun little project: to make a small indie game under the name 'Elements.' Little did they know that their part-time hobby game would turn into a ground-breaking MMORTS. What did stay true all these years is the commitment of those modders to work with the players to create a truly enjoyable and unique RTS experience. Three "Elements" veterans have stayed with Reverie World to this day!

2003 - The First Races



Over time, those smiley faces evolved into hobbits and orcs, and the game world of Mythador begin to take form. Dawn of Fantasy development can be officially traced back to 2003, when Dawn of Fantasy become the official project name, and the core team behind the project was formed. However - back in these days this was still a hobby indie development - nothing but a dream really...

2004 - The Rise of Man



The hobbits gained two feet in height, and the Realm of Teria was born. While the game was still barely playable, many new buildings and units were added as well as some stiff animations and effects. The team grew - and the dream was slow becoming a reality - although still an indie undertaking, with part-time contributions.

2005 - There are Elves in these Forests



2005 marked the official start of our company. As the game's founders decided that they have a good thing going - and it was time to get serious about DOF's development. Reverie World Studios, INC. was born under the leadership of co-owners Konstantin Fomenko and John Lockwood.The Elves joined the Men and Orcs, and modern DOF was at its infancy.

2006 - Programming and Playability



The gears shifted between graphics and new art assets to programming and playability around this time, and an early demo build allowed players to build up small fortresses from scratch in a quick-paced skirmish/Online Kingdom hybrid mode.

2007 - The Advent of the Fan Community



The forums we're using now were created in 2007, and fans started rushing in - some of whom you can still find frequenting these forums, many of whom are now forum moderators, strike team testers, or developers! These early fans had a great impact on development with some awesome ideas and suggestions for the game.

2008 - The Online Kingdom & Lighthouse Interactive



Between 2007 and 2008, the Online Kingdom took flight with stronghold construction, a persistent environment, and a navigable world map, originally using sprites against a 2D background image. In mid 2008, Dawn of Fantasy was signed by Lighthouse Interactive, but the bliss was short-lived as the publisher declared bankruptcy in early 2009 and Dawn of Fantasy was, once again, an indie game.

2009 - The Alpha



Much of 2009 was spent on polishing and expanding the scale of the game. 2009 introduced many of the environment effects and stronghold designs seen today.

2010 - Change of Plans



2010 was a year of twists and turns, as dozens of new features were added to the game while it was being showcased to potential publishers. These features include a new battalion system, the Kingdom Wars game mode, a new design for the interface and unit/building GUIs, new NPC interaction, and visitable realms such as those of the Dragons and the Dwarves. And finally, 2010 introduced hundreds of new players to the Dawn of Fantasy closed beta. Unfortunately, a number of features had to be cut to make this all possible, including navies and the single-player campaign, but these will likely see the light of day as part of DLC packs post-release.

2011 - The Home Stretch



2011 started off strong with the announcement of international publisher 505 Games' acquisition of Dawn of Fantasy. Over the last five months, the Dawn of Fantasy beta has thrived and now includes a taste of all DOF's game modes, and the game has undergone several aesthetic changes as well as new voice-overs, music tracks, high-poly hero models, and beautiful opening cinematics now in production. At long last, release is on the horizon as Dawn of Fantasy prepares to hit store shelves this summer!
