What sort of formations are in the game? How complex are they? Will there be much flexibility/customisation involved? Will they be crucial to gameplay?

For directional damages and bonuses, its do-able, but not currently in game and I don't think its even been thought of, our units in game are in many various angles while fighting enemies, using this feature tacitly would be very tricky.

I believe guys with shields have a "raise shield" ability that makes them take less damage from arrows.

Maybe a Phalanx formation would be good, nice defending position...
