Sucks to hear your experience with Darssen was so anticlimactic
And yeah that was a glitch. However, there is an easy solution if this ever happens again.
Manually move the tower or ram as close the wall/gate as possible, and once it`s right next to it - click the wall to attach or the gate to attack, and it`ll work.
