From some inside info I have - it`s not usually about "money" but Advertisement contracts and freebies. Although it`s rare to see an outright bribe - like review getting a brand new gaming copy with a review copy of the game
In most cases developer or publisher spends from minimal 10k to upwards of 200k with major websites and this of-course helps with the review process. Some of you might recall a story at gamespot that got-out a while back - I don`t recall the details but it was just a case where an honest reviewer who badly reviewer a game that had major marketing contract with Gamespot got fired over it.
