It's never bothered me that units cycle between 2 or 3 types of animations. I usually don't even notice if a game went cheap and only did one type of animation per action.
As I said it's not really as bad as I make it out to be, it's just really a nice little touch.
It is good to hear that they cannot attack while their defense animation is being played. In fact it's good to hear in general that they have a defense animation.
