I try to stay out of our .css files as much as possible. I've been known to go for 20+ hrs. straight editing stuff until it's "just right"... I just recently spent around 30 hrs. doing little profile rank images for 133 different flavors of branch of service and last held rank combinations for my members to use in their profiles/posts.
