Population Cap?
 

Is 81 the permanent population cap? Or is it because I haven't gotten far enough into the game yet? I'm playing human and i've got a thriving economy and a small army amassed but I'm almost near my population cap and I have a lot left to be desired as far as developing my army.

You can have 5 armies on the world map, each with a cap of 60 battalions.

Your homeland cap depends on the number of houses/huts/residences you have, up to 90 max.

As Brian mentioned you can have additional 300 population in your armies, and mid-late game it comes down to world map action and building up your armies instead of your homeland.

Will there eventually be the addition of more armies and higher population cap? I'm and old C&C guy and love having massive heaps of troops

There are no immediate plans to increase the number of armies, but this is something we might consider after the Siegeworks expansion.
