Review of Dawn of Fantasy: Kingdom Wars

Disclaimer: This review was written prior to H11Zone joining Reverie as the new Community Manager
Dawn Of fantasy, what a game it is, it was originally launched in October 1st, 2011, with so much excitement and a lot going for it, but was plagued by poor programming and bugs and rushed by the publisher, features promised but never delivered. Still we all had high hopes and knew there was something special there. So the Devs still apart of development that cared about the game and wanted to see it grow, ended up taking care of it out of their own pocket over the past year and a half just worked mostly for free, using whatever means, any current sales to invest into better servers or pay for outsourcing some fixes here and there and now they released a new version on steam with many new features and updates that fixed a ton of the game making it a lot better than its first official launch.
So on to my review- I’m a huge Real-time strategy nut, I’v played nearly everything the genre has to offer. And this game has a lot to offer and more, with some concerns of course. But what game does not, even triple A games have their issues, and this game only cost 15$ with the same features if not more. This game is a combination of Real-time Strategy/MMO, hence why it’s called an MMORTS, which I believe is the first of its kind in a Medieval Fantasy setting compared to every game on steam which is remarkable.

Story- It’s set in a Medieval Fantasy Setting. The story is done by dialog text with Npcs. It’s not bad, but it’s not great either. So I won't go into story much. When the gameplay is the most important.

Gameplay- Definitely a highlight, but there are some problems. So let’s discuss the highlights. There are many many many features, Such as the ability to build Castles/Fortresses and gather resources to build massive armies, which is very addicting and rewarding. It’s set up like any other Rts, but a lot deeper. So how is it deeper? Well, since it is set up in a mmo environment, Buildings have a set timer on them till they finish. Some take as long as 2hrs or low as 10mins. This worried me at first, like why would I want to wait 2hrs for a structure to be built? However there is SECRET WEAPON. Crowns o crowns how I love the, Yes Crowns, it is the currency in game to buy dragons, units, resources or the big one, upgrade buildings or make construction faster , even instant.

http://s24.postimg.org/jz3h51lz9/dof_site_bg_crap.jpg

So is it pay to win? Well yes and no, but in my personal opinion i don't think so, it is however done brilliantly, which is where pvp/questing comes in. Crowns are more for convenience and priced quite well, they also can be accumulated in pvp between armies or Sieging a castle or even questing. There is many types of quests such as Raiding towns/castles or even escort missions. Also you can buy crowns earned from gold gathered or a great new feature (Corpse looting) the looting of fallen units. You can play the entire game without even spending a penny on crowns, which is awesome. Here’s where things become very interesting, you have 3 races Humans, Orcs, and Elves and soon to have even more races, that play externally different from each other, not in just play style but the way they gather and build structures. Their are also light RPG elements to help you progress your hero and units to perform better. There is an over world where u can level up your armies and make allies or enemies between towns which is pretty gorgeous. The game also plays for you while your offline just at a slower pace which is quite nice.

http://s23.postimg.org/j72nbcdiz/what.png

Graphics/Presentation- The games art style is fantastic and the castles and environments are a pleasure to behold. However there are some bugs and glitches in the environments. Such as Catapults or units getting stuck in walls and having to relog to fix those issues is slightly annoying, otherwise for most part it’s a bright and lively looking game. They also give you a choice of regions before you start a city which give you passive bonuses that can change our whole game such as plains for better cavalry and mountains for defense, and you also get to choose from 2 traits that can strengthen your army or economy. The best part is seeing massive armies taking on Capitols which is breathtaking to watch, but I wish path finding could be better it's kind of all over the place some units not responding or just sitting there and their is some great animations, and some very bad ones as well. And the ui is pre dated, it works, but it no means perfect, but the good news is the Devs are working on it nonstop, and we have great things to come. Such as Dx10 support and even ship sieges. Speaking of the Devs this has to be the most amazing community I’ve ever seen. The Devs and mods are always on to chat giving refunds for lost items or answer questions and even take criticisms and take responsibility for their choices. There has already been 3 patches that have fixed many issues and more to come.

Sound- The music and atmosphere is wonderful. However combat sounds, well sounds like I’m having a war with my kitchen, was amusing at first but now I can't stand it and for some reason its loud even on the lowest volume setting. Possibly it’s just an issue on my side.

In the end, The game is very addicting, I have 4 cities, and massive armies, sure theirs many issues and bugs and sometimes horrible path finding, and pvp doesn’t always work, yes there has been major crashes but only because the game has grown so fast, there was none of these issues before, but the community and gameplay is just so rewarding I can't stop.So glad I’m done with this review, Already 70hrs in and all I want is more! The Review easily could have been pages and pages with everything the game has to offer.

Final Verdict A solid 8.0/10

Looks good, it seems like you put alot of work into this!

This guy played for about 70 hours in four days, not only that but he became a part of the team and hopefully to be a permanent asset to the team, so he is credible if you ask me! He is extremely friendly and helpful, helped me out multiple times.

Although it's a nice review, I still wish you would have expanded a little on the story section, for the people who are a little more intersted in that area rather than other aspects of the game. Also concerning the sound, I had a good laugh, not only that but also because it's quite true, I cannot say for myself that it sounds any more appealing in my own kitchen!

Personally I played the game for about two days now, extremely enjoyable to say the least, although lacking multiplayer and co-op possiblities such as Guilds, Alliances and the like, the bugs aren't that persistent, but you encounter them at times.

This was quite the honest review and honesty goes a long way when someone reviews a game. This game deserved a good review and this should be placed not only on the games forums but on other websites for publicity and to get more income for the dev team to work with. I know i already own the game but i'd like to give it away to a friend. Great job once again hillzone you always do such great things for this game and you deserve the highest recognition for your efforts.

Another note is to all who knock this man for making such a sound review, should be ashamed of themselves. This man loves this game and found that giving it a review would be a nice contribution. It's something that this game needs, it needs us, we should support it as much as possible because if we don't this game won't go anywhere as quick as we want it to!

Hillzone your review on the sound was quite funny because only when you pointed out the kitchen sounds it just sounded bad, but now every time i'm in battle i can't help but laugh!

I've definitely showed this game to a couple of my friends. So far I'm really enjoying it. I have done QA for games so the bugs that are present don't really bother me especially because I can see that the devs are working to fix them and improve the game.

This was $15 well spent...I've already put in about 5-10 hours and plan to put in many more (really excited for the large siege battles).

You messaged me on skype and I found this, after a bit of looking around, this game seems time consuming, but very fun. The whole idea that you can add friends ans help each other out in they're "quest" not sure what to call it.
But I would like to receive a code for the game because money is tight at the moment, and it seems like you are pretty generous, so please, and thank you so much for the review.

Very nice review, allot of good information and I've been looking into the game allot and really want it but still not sure on a few things yet so still deciding along with a friend of mine which may join me, though I'm kind of short on money at the moment. I will keep looking out to see improvements.

7/10 So far I would give it just from looking at streams and such.

Since when does humor in a review make it unprofessional? I'm sure 90%+ of Xplay's reviews contained at least 1 joke/humorous comment especially in the video reviews and that was an extremely popular place for reviews. We are gamers after all, better to see a "real" review than an extremely analytical wall of text that is hard to relate to.

Besides the kitchen sounds remind me of AoE2! :)

A professional review has to have some sort of humor or else it's a bland review. To be honest very professional news reporters and reviewers of video games use a lot of humor about the game in order to get their point across from not just a professional standpoint.

Your so called "advice" is not appreciated just for the sake that it is not correct. What he did was made his readers laugh and still take it seriously as though it were professional.

Try making a review yourself (not as easy as you may think) instead of trying to call out someones professionalism. :D

basically im going to review his review, the game-play is stunning rts with major animation and graphical quirks that are miles up from previous un-finished "in my opinion" version of the game before, now things are so much different the game is actually fun...

the different races are actually different playstyles and there's almost, lore based creativity instilled into them not just cosmetic changes. +1 for the races

admitting the faults is a big step forward and it acknowledges that they know theres things to work on and that gives me great hope for a great game, so thanks

the graphics are cool, the colours are really vibrant and the difference in snow rain grass day/night is so cool and makes it change the environments feel drastically better and much more dynamic.

on a personal note, me and my bf bought 2 copies, at the start of the stream and have been playing, since, on his account, its excellent in so many ways and the social aspect is fantastic, the guy, "brandon" hi11zone who was streaming, was so polite, enthusiastic, creative and intelligant but made me feel like his friend not a customer, he was playing and joking, while answering emails, ide say a promotion is due soon?

if you guys every need help advertising "im already gonna tell my freidns serious game nerd btw" but any more, or admin stuff, forum mods, game mods, support, or wiki devs? im free a lot.. good job on the game and im looking forward to more updates and patches and maybe more projects and Ip's in the future. gl, and thank you x
