Can you play with others from overseas?

So as title says...

Regarding online mode...my friend lives over in Europe, but I'm in the US. Would he need to buy a US copy? Or can he just play on the server(s), and we'll both be able to play together?

In beta, we can both play together. Would be cool to be able to live, as well.

Yes, everyone in the world will be on the same server so, you can play with anyone in the world.
