I have never seen an rts do this, but itís always been obvious to me. Instead of creating heroes, you just create regular soldiers. Every time they survive a battle they grow stronger. Eventually youíll just be left with one or two that have kept surviving (against enemy armies and heroes) and are by far the strongest, they made themselves heroes. Then you could customize/name them or whatever.

Itís an awesome idea for heroes to rise up from regular ranks, almost as if they are alive. They would be able to get ridiculously strong, but to a point. Eventually he will come in contact with another ridiculous hero.

We sort of already have this in dawn of fantasy but on the level of battalions. after a large battle you may have a few battalions with very few members, these battalions because of their combat experience can level up in skills of your choosing. Greatly weakened battalions, even if its only 1 sole surviving member can return to your homeland and slowly restore to full battalion member size, all of the experience is shared over to the new members; the old members will 'train' the new ones.

This allows battalions to carry over from game to game to game to game again and again, you will see Your level 17 Grand Master battalion and remember all the battles they prevailed and have the skills you chose to your liking.
Would be interesting to rename any battalion to your liking,,, that could be added in a patch later on maybe. ;)

Naming would be great if they get define-ly powerful, even customizing their look, turning them into some kind of "royal guard" to be noticed and feared by the enemy.

What I was thinking (for the soldier to hero) is as they get more powerful (level up) their unit cap gets lower and lower until there is one left. This would be when they reached a high enough level to be a single unit and would switch to "hero" title. From there they would continue to progress and level up through special hero stats and abilities.

Unless the whole unit can get as strong as a hero in this game, than this wouldn't make sense.

I like the "Royal Guard" idea, as well as the Unit => Hero idea... couldn't you make it an option, say you want a single hero... click, the unit becomes a hero. When it reaches a certain point of course. But what if I do want a powerful unit... click, now it's a "Royal Guard". You can only make the choice once, of course, then you have to stick with it. One other thing:

"...even customizing their look, turning them into some kind of "royal guard" to be noticed and feared by the enemy."

You definitely have to have that implemented sometime. Not only does it add more customization, but it makes the game more strategic... and painful... 'Hey, look over there, we should get rid of that Hero/Hero Unit first to minimize their damage...'

Over all awesome idea. :)

That would be really cool in this game environment and the threads idea would fit really well.

hey, you know it would be a nice idea to create a weapon creation system, like smiths and squads with customizable weapons, also it would be great to implement kind of a looting system, like, after a battle, have the surviving soldiers scavenge the corpses for weapons and money, and to be able to use those weapons or armor as equipment available to your units :)
