Beta testers,

All of us at Reverie World are happy to finally announce the day many of us - both developers and fans, have been waiting for. Closed Beta Wave 1 officially starts at 1pm EST on June 21st. Second wave will start middle of July. Third wave - early August.

More details will follow during the next two weeks and all the CB 1 testers will receive e-mail later next week with instructions on getting started.

Unfortunately there will be a little bit of paperwork for everyone involved in CB1 and CB2, but it should take you just under 20 minutes to get through this.

We are looking forward to sharing the game with you guys!

Wait... Your giving massive incentives to testers who already have the incentive of playing the game? :o Thats a sweet deal for the testers lol :D
Strangely the name and reference are the things I see as most valuable... They may not have any literal value, but their priceless and cannot be bought. I think its great that Reverie are offering this, although I'm not sure what they gain from it lol :)

I think its great that Reverie are offering this [beta incentives], although I'm not sure what they gain from it lol

This gives people incentive to actually give us detailed good bug reports (harder to get than you'd think :)).
Also, we have a 'strike team' to QA test our new patches (before release.. don't want buggy patches even in open beta.. and after release).
Lastly it will give us a pool of people to pick from who could possibly become our next game's QA testers.

If you ever get into game making or ask any developers you will realize how important it is for someone outside the team to have playtest your game. You have the usual response that the company is just letting people play the game...as a demo or taste of what they are buying.

I'm saying this from experience about people not playtesting my groups levels and games, to people playtesting them. You will see the big difference in quality.

Aha, that was smart thinking :) And pretty sweet for those who are deemed worthy of that....

I understand how important it is for others to test it, after all everyone is different and will approach it differently, but developers may overlook something in 'their creation', it is far easier to find fault in others than yourself....
I meant surely the testing is incentive enough in itself?

The vast majority of testers treat a beta as a demo, very few actually take the time to give valuable feedback.

Beta testing is tedious (and alpha testing, oh my god). I've beta tested major games before. If you're doing it right you should see small bugs everywhere, but you have to spend large amounts of time reporting them. You can't just say, "Hey, there's a bug here." You need to give a detailed description of how you found the bug, what you were doing, what it is specifically, how reproducible it is, etc. This also isn't just something like say, your unit ran through that wall, it could be a shadow glitch, maybe a tooltip error. Pathing issues. A unit's voiceover. It's pretty insane the number of bugs you can get. When you program a large scale game like this you'll get the meta game going, with a thousand little things that you simply overlooked.

06-03-2010, 03:47 PM
Hmm how about posting a bug list report in the beta forums so that we testers have a nifty form to keep near the pc making it easy to submit the info in standard detail. Also will there be assignments for the beta testers? IE Spam one or two units for a few days to see if the spam is OP?

That should probably answer your question, GPS. Sometimes they'll ask for specific stuff, but it seems that mostly we will test as we see fit.

I was mentioning experience from my group projects(Trying to convince you lead to do something isn't easy). But I wasn't talking about the developers of the the game, but others how understand the development process (Like other students in my program for my example).

Yes most people treat these as a demo which its a shame.

Gleem mention things that unless you know whats going on you wouldn't catch most of those kind of bugs. Most only catch the obvious bugs like you mentioned.

And Gleem its not always tedious. Think positive that you are help someone:).

I didn't mean to go of topic...well..maybe a little

Heh, no kidding, last alpha I was in the entire bug section of the forum was myself with like 2 or 3 posts from others, and I was the only one who putting quality reports, it kinda bothered me to be honest. I think this is a great idea with incentives, I may have to steal someones PC for a while :P I don't need to find bugs, they find me!

Also yes Nickelson, beta testers almost never give any feedback, or quickly stop posting reports after the first few they find. Most actually try to exploit bugs they find, it always bothers me when they're not booted out of beta for it.

As for the guy mentioning alpha testing, yes it can be true hell lol. You spend more time posting bugs than even being in the game during alpha tests.

In my experience there is generally a beta testers section in the forums that only they can see, this usually includes:

Technical Issues (for people having trouble running the game etc)
Bugs (in game bugs non technical related)
General (the general chit chat)

Possible sub-sections in the bugs forum to cater to which dev needs to fix it. Like one for map issues, one for unit balancing issues, one for graphics issues, one for gameplay issues.

As for reporting it's generally you post in the relevant forum section, the game version, the details (coordinates if applicable), and screenshot.

There is also usually the option to report it via email if you feel it is a sensitive bug that can be abused to give a player an advantage, since (as mentioned) a lot of people see it as a free game and would rather exploit than report bugs and issues.

Or there are other ways to report bugs, by ticketing like @DMS (http://digitalmindsoft.eu/). I persnally like it better then posting on the forum every single bug and going off-topic after each and every. It looks like this http://bitecode.de/trac/mow_a4/newticket.

Aametherar
06-03-2010, 11:50 PM
I personally hate tickets, they usually leave a very hard avenue of communication, I find bug reports tend to rarely be posted in unless pertaining to the bug itself. Tickets are only good for malicious/abuse able bugs IMO.

However, I might as well say this now:

Sorry everyone, but I will be unable to participate in the beta :(. I am going to be in Central America [Yucatan, around there] for this Semester, possibly for the next one as well [student abroad program]. Sigh.

But I have the full intention of getting back on with this game as soon as I get back to good old US.

I will be an active member of the forums for about another two weeks, then I am shipping off to start getting accustomed to things. Sigh.

But, for all of you Beta testers out there, rock the gaming industry with this game!

-I may pop onto the forums randomly when I have a chance or an internet jack to plug into.

That's great news!:D I'm glad the beta is finally coming around! I will most certainly avidly report bugs and glitches in the beta because I really want this game to be the best that it can possibly be(and not just because of the intriguing proposition for a position and the free game and influence and the like).

Not true. Their were quite a few contest that not many people joined or took a while for people to join. The I was in didn't have many people join for awhile (only 3 people had post for I think about a week). Another was I think it was called 'Create a Battle' not many people did that one.

Eventually we will be able to play this when it is release. Which will be the time I Conquer you:D.

Nickson is in 3rd, I can confirm, he won the key from my contest.

EDIT: Actually... wait, nevermind. Back when we ran the contests we weren't sure whether the runners up will go into the 2nd or 3rd stage. I though it'd be more likely 3rd but I guess they decided those guys will got to 2nd, so it's all good.

3rd stage? You sure? The list I'm looking at has you in 2nd stage but I'm sure I could move you to 3rd :p

That would be very mean of you :p And I thought I was in 2nd till I checked and Litos had said me and other runner up had 3rd :p

There may easily be mistakes... god, I'll have to check over that list myself.
Nickson is in 3rd, I can confirm, he won the key from my contest.

Yeah, sorry for the misinformation. For some reason they never actually told me which stage the runners up were going to.

Gleem, I've checked the beta list and you are in the 2nd stage

Thanks for the double check. Looks like I'll get to be in the p2 top 15.

Rough translation courtesy of google: I am sad because I'm too late

No need to be sad, you may yet have a chance to get into the closed beta

There will be another grand contest coming up for a few spots in the second Closed Beta. As part of this contest we`ll also announce an ongoing way to get into the 3rd Closed beta (50+ spots). I think we`ll go live with this towards the end of next week.

As a hint - it will involve promoting the game:)

Woo only two more days (because we'll probably all be fighting over bandwidth and dl at like 1 kb/sec)

P.S. I actually think it'll go fast, not a ton of beta testers swarming in at once, just trying to freak everyone out.:)

There's only about 20 testers for the first CB... You'll be fine, A.

Well technically, around 1 day, 1hr and 30 min. I wonder how big the download will be? I have 20 mbps internet so it shouldn't (Edit:I think shouldn't makes more sense then should) be too long.

That's true. I wonder if Mr. Mullens figured out that problem he mentioned?

When can does who have not been given a key get one. I have seen this game for several months now but no chances to apply for beta testing have appeared to me.
