FANTASY FRIDAY V
Capital Towns

This Friday we'll be looking into each race's capital towns. These towns are typically the largest in the region and will be important hubs in the MMORTS world with many quests available from their locals or which take place in these grand cities. These towns can be played either as skirmish maps, or players can travel to them in the MMORTS using the world map feature. Upon arriving in town, players will be able to head to the markets, talk to NPCs, or even wage war against one of these citadels.

DAGBOR
The Human Capital

<img src="http://reverieworld.com/screenshots/ff5/menoverview.jpg" width="800"> (http://reverieworld.com/screenshots/ff5/menoverview.jpg)

Region: Southmount
Difficulty: Hard

The name of Dagbor has echoed through the ages with strength and victory. This is humankind's largest and proudest city. Its defenses are legendary: two layers of walls protect the lower entrance, while the keep itself is circled by a roaring river and treacherous cliffs. The ancient bones of those foolhardy enough to tackle water and rock sometimes resurface briefly, before the lethal undercurrents suck them once more back to their watery prison.

MAKKADA
The Orc Capital

<img src="http://reverieworld.com/screenshots/ff5/orcsoverview.jpg" width="800"> (http://reverieworld.com/screenshots/ff5/orcsoverview.jpg)

Region: Flattan Rol
Difficulty: Hard

Makkada means “Mother Womb,” and it is the pride of the orc race. This place makes all orcs strong, for here orcs were first created. The capital city of the orc kingdom, Makkada is one of the largest cities in the land of Mythador – quite uncharacteristic of orcs, yet there it is - located on a mountain side surrounded by deadly swamp. This town is protected by numerous layers of walls, not to mention the royal keep on the mountain top. It can only be taken by a truly massive army.

ILLAS TILTOS
The Elven Capital

<img src="http://reverieworld.com/screenshots/ff5/elvesoverview.jpg" width="800"> (http://reverieworld.com/screenshots/ff5/elvesoverview.jpg)

Region: Bolfores'l
Difficulty: Hard

The great capital city of the elven realm embodies all the awesome power of this immortal race. Its beauty is unearthly and unwelcoming. Boleta hums in every space, and the trees are giants here. Few that are not elves have witnessed the glory of Illas Tiltos and lived to tell the tale. Twin walls built with elven craft stand tall about the inner keep, and it is said that to siege Illas Tiltos would be to blow against a hurricane.

What do you mean? Leaves fall off in the spring and grow in fall/winter! lol

Alex for some weird reason took some of these shots in the editor where we have great tree leaves disabled so they don't get in the way of creating the level. :p

I'd like to point out, that Dagbor's walls are currently flawed, you can see seams and what not, it was a stronghold not built by me, but I defiantly do plan to fix these walls to a more seamless perfection. :)

You have a persistent city that you build on to, and an army to build on to as well, every time you log in. You can do quests, build your city, travel with your army, and attack your rivals or defend your city from them. (You can do those with your friends as well. This is just a brief description, so it won't say many details. You will be in a world with thousands of other players at a time doing the aforementioned things.

Great screenshots guys! I really like the look of the npc cities. They really look alive with all the people and the trading and stuff.

Why does Dagbor, around all the towers, have a bunch of scaffolding on them? They look finished to me.

i have to say i cant complain about the games graphics anymore, for some reason all the units look much better ( at least the human ones ). and the city streets look realistically congested with crappy houses and randmon stuff, wich i like a lot becasue it makes the city look so much more realistic
also i really like the look of the winter season, it makes the game so much more detalied with bits of snow on houses and walls
great screenshots alex, i have to hand it to you these are the best pics ive seen of dawn of fantasy ( and ive seen them all :D )
Great Pics

Love the elvish nightime =),
but as i see i am little questioning the strategic purpose of elvish town. Since Humans have river/many layers and that stuff, than orcs have bigbig city that masses of hords defend it so it doesnt need some kind other protection, than there is elvish which looks similar to orcish one (wall is rounded and it is waving and have 2 layers) but they dont have masses to make up for that (aka same vulnerable from all sides so everywhere needs to be guarded on same lvl).
Or am i missing something ?=P
Well in my logic, since they are elves and that live with nature, they would help themselves with some natural defenses.

No, the elves don't have the numbers the orcs have. But keep in mind that elven units are stronger, and they have good archers and walls.

I must add to this,,, if you have a group of well trained elves holding a very narrow bottle neck point such as a well designed elven staircase, its quite funny seeing some cool '300' moments where the elves will just keep on slaughtering orc horde after horde after horde. until they get some archers and catapults taking them out. :p

LOL, ill have recreate Thermopylae using the DOF editor and some mods
ive always loved spartans, will there be human units capable ( like spearmen ) able to use the Phalanx formation? ( aka were each man protects the man to the right useing his sheild, standing as a single walled unit, while they stab ppl 10ft away with the spearmen )

So their strategic defense is on staircases ?=P

Sorry couldnt help myself =P (its just a joke).

Have just one question. Since elves are few and walls are quite long on picture ..... is it possible with elvish pop cap to fill all wall with at least 1 row (4ish soldiers on tower) of elvish soldiers so all wall is somewhat covered?

Not quite. When a game "goes gold," development is 100% complete. At this point, the game is sent our for mass production and will hit shelves a couple weeks early.

It won't take this long to get to the point where we can publish a recorded game, but it will take a couple months of balancing, polishing, and finishing all, or at least most, of the game mechanics. It will be perfectly playable earlier on in the betas, but this is more for testing and not something we want to publicize.

I am pleased, however, to announce that we have plans for other, fully narrated teaser videos which we will show in early 2010.

Wow love the commentary, looks great although i possibly would like to see a few screens of them in action in a defence? Etc. Or possibly a video of each?

Anyways great job they all look amazing. The orc looks the most defensible. But i think the elven looks the grandest and would probably be my choice. Gets me away from the typical human race play :)

While not as ostentatiously as big or cool as it could be, I find it to be fine. As long as it's the biggest elf npc city, and the most powerful, I will be fine with it. Though, it is lacking something special in it. Dagbor has the river and the fancy double wall thing, Makkada has interlocking wall segments with its back to the mountains, while Illas Tiltos just has just a double layer of walls.

Yes huge (=bigger than others) tree for main tree house would be nice =). Since you can see at humans and i guess also orcs (if i see right trough mist) which is main house but cant at elves. And somewhat agree also with Darathor.

Sorry if this has already been posted just looked at the images. For capitol cities that commands armys of thousdands the only one that looks the right size (if a little small) to produce such armys is the orcs, as they all seem smaller than i anticipated. And with such comments i do have a few questions:

1. All though they all look good as you level and your city grows will these further themselves to grow bigger and bigger?

2. I saw you type about the human capitol not being a good quality finish at the time, but i did see construction works. After a failed siege on one of the capitiols would the structures have to be reconstructed like all other peoples would have to do or would it just ping back to pristene?

Btw sorry if im a dumb dumb :)

Darathor
12-23-2009, 08:28 PM
I think the capitol cities are actually much bigger than these screenshots indicate. The npc cities won't get bigger as player cities get bigger. I think player cities won't be able to get much larger than the capitols. The capitols would just go back to being all perfect after an attack so other people can attack it.

actually the orc capital is the easiest in my opinion since orcs are weaker units. The elves however are a pain since they have powerful units and the constant powerful reinforcements can be quite an issue I bet.
