Fantasy Friday III – Economies & Resources

Economies in Dawn of Fantasy revolve around four primary resources: food, wood, stone, and gold. Each race features a unique economy, each catering to a different playstyle. Food is typically used in training new soldiers, wood goes toward new buildings, stone goes toward walls, towers, and siege, and gold is used for toward select units and upgrades.

The humans have a traditional RTS economy with the peasant as the standard villager unit. They gather food from farms or livestock, mine stone and gold, and chop down trees for wood. Peasants require drop-off points, such as horse carts, mills, or the townhall, for all resources. Unlike the elves or orcs, the humans can build farms on specified plots to provide a constant, but slow, source of food.

<table width="370" border="0" align="right"><tr><td><a href="http://reverieworld.com/screenshots/ff3/villagers.jpg"><img src="http://reverieworld.com/screenshots/ff3/villagersthumb.jpg" align="center"></a><br/><center>Primary Villager Units From Left to Right:<br/>Marauder, Peasant, Male Warden, Female Warden, Labourer</center></td></tr></table>

The orcs have Labourers and Marauders as their villager units. These units serve as the foundation for not only the orc economy, but the military as well. You can task your huts to train either labourers or marauders, at which point battalions of these worker units will be in constant, automatic production at no cost to you. The marauders are fierce archer huntsmen capable of hunting wildlife; while the labourer units are capable of chopping wood, mining stone and gold and building buildings anywhere on the map in an open space – not restricted in building placement like the other two races. Players can send labourers and or marauders into orc military buildings to train them, resulting in them coming out as a new warrior units.

The elven economy is largely automated, especially in late-game, and features the Warden as their standard economic unit. Wardens can be trained as either male or female. Both units are identical in abilities, except the females wield a bow and arrow while the males are melee units. The wardens can gather fruit and mine stone and gold. Being one with their majestic forests, the elves do not chop down trees for wood or hunt the forests’ animals, although they can breed deer to release into the forest in exchange for food. To supplement this, the elves construct their buildings on great trees which provide a constant trickle of wood. Each elven residencies also provide a trickle of a resource of the players’ choice, and, through the Alchemy Lab building, players can trickle some resources into another resource (ie: drain food, wood, and stone, to get a generous trickle of gold). And at the Symbiosis Shrine, players can summon forest spirits, to provide an increased trickle of wood, or spend resources to summon another resource – spend wood and food to summon an enchanted gold mine.

Nice looking economies! I like how they are all different and interesting in there own way. I particularly like the orcs' economy, with the two different orc worker types and the ability to train them into warriors. 'Tis nifty.

Also, are the wardens and marauders good for fighting at all?

Marauders are an excellent ranged unit of the Orcs in fact. Which makes them a very unique unit. In times of peace they're very productive at what they do, but outside of that they're also an important part of the orc war machine. This will lead to the orc army, which most thought was lacking heavily in the ranged department to having a rather large contingent of archers in their city. Which lends itself quite nicely to defensive situations where archers gain a bonus to range and damage from the walls.

So unless you don't like food for some reason, the orcs will indeed have a strong defense in the form of the hunter-gatherer marauder.

As for wardens, I haven't actually come to a situation where I've needed them to do anything but gather while playing. The elven rangers patrolling the walls keep my city quite safe. I imagine in a pinch the archer-workers would certainly contribute, as a ranged unit their low health wouldn't be that much of a problem, stick them on a tower not directly in the line of fire. The male wardens however, I doubt they'd be standing up in a fight very long. A militia if anything, certainly not a mainstay like the marauder is to the orcs.

I have been reinforced in the idea that i am never going to play elves, however you have swayed me more towards orcs than human... They really do sound fun to play...

So Orcs build up troops the fastest at the start of the game? Considering they are costless and basic units...

Andy Joslin
12-05-2009, 07:37 AM
Yes, but the more units the orcs have the slower they are to automatically get more from their huts.

Also, marauders alone wouldn't really make a good rushing army; they are pretty flimsy health-wise.;)

12-05-2009, 08:03 AM
so the human economy is the slowest, and weakest?
and also, if the orcs use muaraders for hunting and defense, what happens if they have to leave the city to find food?, and if the player sends all his muaraders in a castle siege? will the player have no income of food? or are maurders THAT easily trained?
very nice pictures and information

hmm with regard to the ecomonies it sounds very intresting do the elves still gain rescources of military units and which is the fastest to colect. Eg can you do upgrades to imporve the flow of the trickle or auto balance to change when you have to many of one trickle.

Very interesting.

I can easily compare these economies to match the civilization playstyles of another certain RTS game (Excluding gathering soldiers) I have played, but it is still going to be very interesting playing them.

Maybe the economy will become a serious issue between neighboring players, what I find excititng about RTS MMOs is to roleplay as a king and go through all sorts of political conversation and deciding between ending a conflict through force or diplomatically.

I hope the PVP is not only oriented towards force, but also through diplomacy ;p.

it is, a major part of the mmo is forming alliances ect. also managing trade and economy, and relations with neighboring players, so this game will have to implement diplomacy effectilvy to make it all work out. in my opinion

I'm glad you were dissuaded from the proposed differences in gender that you were discussing a while back.
I think i like the Human economy best - it's more familiar to me.

Kire

Wow nice .... as Puppeteer i also like the most human one (its the most logical =P).
Are those gender at wardens random spawned like AoE2 (female + male)? It would be nice to be random (in my opinion) if its not already.
Beside that it would be also nice if would be also random range/melee (so males could have bows and also female could be melee). To make bigger diversity.

Alex Walz

I'm not sure what you're asking. The world map hasn't changed - you can see the button labeled "World Map" that you click to open it.

I think you're referring to the square mini-map, which is surrounded by the compass frame. The mini-map shows only a small segment of the world map - the town or region you're currently in.

As for the design being different depending on the race, yes, each race has its own User Interface. The orc UI is crude stone and wood, the human UI is nicer wood and a steel border, and the elven UI is natural, green, and leafy.

Definalty. in order to actually seige someone youll have to manage your economy well and aquire resources like food ect. and then build up troops and such and become a warmongerer. also in the mmo versoin of the game your castle goes with you from fight to fight, thus so does your economy. you will be able to make your cities utterly massive in the mmo version ( all versions actually ) and you cannot build a massive city in 20 minutes, according to reverie it will take weeks of work to build up your city in the MMO version ( compard to an hour in the singleplayer campaign ). So yes economy will be a huge part of the game. also trading will be a big part. sending out caravans to buy and sell supplies at a foreign market will be a part in the game, also protecting them, as well as attacking enemy caravans. In the MMO version you wont even have to neccasarily fight, you can reject fights when someone attacks you, so you can focus complelty on your economy if you choose to.

Jack
12-08-2009, 01:54 PM
but to get a big size city
you need weeks and than you still have non?
that would be a big deal if you ask me, but i cant wait IF i am chose for the last round for this game:)

Darathor
12-08-2009, 03:44 PM
If you reject a fight, though, you must pay the attacker a sum of resources. It should take a few weeks to get a good size city if you aren't playing 6+ hours everyday like I will.:D

6 hours a day??? im giving up my girlfriend to play this lol :P............
(JOKE IF YOU EVER COME LOOKING DONT BEAT ME lol )

Anyways yes it should be good. As things grow more expensive i beleive it should be a pretty even progression through the stages with players having to make strategic descisions at many points. I.e buy the wall or improve rescource production etc. :) should make for some good good gameplay cant wait :)

well, it would be cool if all the beta testers joined up in the same alliance, then made war to every knew player, the original testers would be like the evil in the world of dawn of fantasy, and there would be big rivalries. anyone wanna join my scheme?

and jack, only in the MMO version will it take a long time to get a big city, so don't worry

i think that after like a week of DOF being released there will be thousnds of people on the servers, so the beta testers will have a good challenge.
but if it does get to uneven the beta testers could split up in a couple of alliances, ally themselves with noobs, and duke it out, that would be cool to

I understand your scheme but there is a problem with it. All the experiances players will form an alliance and crush the emerging ones. The game will get unbalanced and the new players will have no hope of becoming powerful. There will be one alliance in the whole world that will dominate, and the rivality will be absent, in a war game o_O .
that's my opinion, i have seen it allredy in some MMOs.

Anyway cookie seems nice proposal ...... but it must be my name written on them all =P.

Beside that alliance sounds like story for itself. Why? Well ... we form alliance, play few months/weeks, some ppl become bored, many ppl have different opinions, some ppl think they are better than others ..... betrayal starts, ppl leave, ppl become rasistic to other races, members kill each others, other alliances are formed also quite strong ... pew pew kill kill, the battle for place in the world begin, who will win? The true defenders of alliance or will evil prevail?=P I like caos muahhaa =P (we must just choose weak leader) so i say yes for alliance but i must get cookies too .... Imba story if you are involve in it =).
Beside i think we are going little offtopic=P

So back on topic; i saw on pictures big mines.... looks quite realistic must say .... i like them =P. I just hope this game will have also option if you are attack that workers can hide in buildings like AoE and since they are armed here they could shoot from house.

I'm racist in fantasy games like this. I love a race so much, and I love it as a race and will try anything to preserve even the tiniest blot of civilization of that race. But, if I'm a different race, I love killing the race that I would do anything to preserve if I was that race. So, I will be elves, I will try to help other elves as much as I can, and I will kill humans and orcs and have fun. If I'm orcs, I will love to kill all the pansy elves and I would feel so awesome if I did. I love killing races that I love to play.

^ Uhm...that makes sense :p
Anyways, the economy looks great. The different way each one works out is awesome, although I think I like the automated elven economy most- I've always hated eco management in RTS's because I'm just plain bad at it ;)

Looking forward to it, I'll definitely try out all the races when this comes out...

Ever thought of doing movie trailors :P

Hmm sounds like a point also from what i beleive in the posts previous we wont be able to face the new players etc anyway only thoose of a similiar level (from what i remember on the balance of battle topic etc a few months ago). The battle system lets you fight people only around your level to prevent the proposed from happening so we will probably have to split into groups anyway to even have any action in the start. (dont want it to become tribalhugs:P)

I'm still all for playing the elves, since all the resource's trickle in constantly it gives me lesser things to micro-manage and more time for me to worry about what really matters. Which is killing the stupid orczies and the ambitious humans.

So you play eve eh? So do i:p however all i got is a almost fitted tier 2 battle cruiser and funds enough to fit the "rookie" ship:D Seriously eve is hard, i have used months to get where i am and i am far from being done. Ohh eve how i love it yet hate it:D When i play it i feel bored, when i don't play it i feel excited about it:o I just cant stop my payment yet i cant start the playing:p Anyways there are lots of politics but i know one policy that is stronger then any of the others there. Ohh god how you wish you'd never see what i saw. Twenty sniping ships far away sniping everyone, however we lost everything we had and i was kicked out of the guild as the one to blaim for them knowing where we had our base. (it was not me:( ) Anyways politics are fun especially with war as a possibility. But the greatest politics game out there is HOI III (hearts of iron 3:) ) Its politics all the way until you cry, its so complicated so after one month of continuous playing i finally got norway to conquer europe:D Hearts of iron is a must if you think politics are fun:D

Hmm sounds good to me might give it a go. Yes i have thought about playing eve but it seems to far win all or loose everything to be a payed subscription etc. It is alittle degrading after months and months of playing you could be wiped out in a single move and not have anything to show for it. Although i guess that was the same with the game tribal wars i played where it took constant play to stay at the top. (sorting through 10,000 attacks to determine which contained nobles and which were army's/fakes really does take it out of you. however i enjoyed my time :). I think this game is alot better with its save system. /You would really have to try hard to reduce a player to nothing on this. (im thinking constant attacks everytime they come online :P)

As of now there are no plans for any resource to become inaccessible in MMORTS mode. Trees regrow, mines are inexhaustible and food can be gathered from respawning wild life, livestock and for some races trickles via livestock/certain buildings.
