i'm definitely interested in working on the game design because i've been pretty deep into the theory since i was about 14 or so, but I definitely don't have 20+ hours a week with uni and what-not. i'd like to help wherever i can though to help with my portfolio (i'm a broadcasting and electronic media major). i don't have a finished game design doc or even a resume though. i know. i know. lazy. but just let me know if you're still interested in getting some help in that area. I just can't help 20+ hours with school. final exams are drawing near.

I myself considered level designer, but I simply don't have the time to commit to it. I'm certainly old enough and I have enough work in the Warcraft III map editor to put together a respectable portfolio, but finding 15 hours per week simply wasn't in the cards.

Hey they will probably pick who they favor the most or who is qualified. Or maybe they will just choose a bunch of random people. :p The main thing I would want to check out in the beta first would be the giant castle and trick it out with all sorts of expansions. That's what got me looking at this game in the first place.

11-10-2007, 11:47 AM
Don't mistake beta testing for QA testing. They're very different things. While beta testing is often casual, usually relying on masses of people to undercover any issues, QA testing is far more intensive, usually focusing on breaking the game by any means necessary, then reproducing the effects that caused the breakdown to identify one source. Having never done QA testing, I can't speak to protocols, but usually the last you actually do is play the game as it's meant to be played.

The Witch King of Angmar

What do you mean by breaking the game? Do you need to do this to look for specific issues?

There is no guarantee about beta testing. Right now we are only looking for QA testers - people who will work with the devs from the inside. In the future when we will be looking for beta testers, there may be some preference for people that applied for the QA position but didn't make it.

Note when applying that previous experience with other games in development or closed betas is not required but it is a big bonus. So if you don't have previous experience try to give us a reason why to take you over someone with experience.

What do you mean by breaking the game? Do you need to do this to look for specific issues?

Yes. The purpose of QA testing is locating all the bugs of the game.

A simple example of trying to "break the game": If the mission tells you to go left, you go right and see if that makes a problem.

Of course actual tests are more complicated.

I understand exactly what he means. He means will you try to do things that aren't supposed happen in a certain part of the game (ex: try to run off the map) and see the result. If this is what a QA tester is like, I could definitly do it. Often when I'd get bored in BFME or console games I'd use different characters in diffirent scenarios and see if they could extend the limits of the game or go somewhere which is not available until later in the game. I've also seen alot of custom maps and identified bugs such as unit pictures not comming up or clicking on a unit and a build button comming up and so forth.

Yes, this is a big and important part in game QA testing.

iceblast
11-10-2007, 01:40 PM
yes this is rather important because there would be quite alot of bugs on some sport games i see if i can keep going out of touch or run as far as i can and see what happens when im out of touch one time i manages to end up in the stadium stands  on bfme2 i always tried to sail of the edges with boats ect ;p how many people would be ideal for QA's

Those are the requirements from the original post:

-QA Testers
-Long-term passion for RTS games
-Understanding of QA and bug reporting procedures.
-extensive closed beta testing experience.
-commitment of 15 hours a week

And it depends on konstantin who gets in not on me, i just can recomand you what to write in the application and what not to write.

Please also note that QA testing is completely confidential. You will have to sign a legally binding Non-disclosure agreement. Thus meaning you cannot show your friends, post images or even speak about the game without consent from Reverie World Studios.

Although working for us is a lot of fun and you get to be a part of a great experience, it's also a large responsibility that carries heavy repurcussions for breaking that responsibility.

Wow, like if i were to write...WHAT WOULD I WRITE??

If you have any expirience in the QA field include that, if you have been on closed betas include that, if you have some amazing bug finding gift include that. Other than that write what RTS games you played, and write a bit about yourself.

Just for your information a few members on the forums sent out their applications and we are seriesly considering taking one of them on the team.

P.S.

We start the interviews next week so if you still realy want it and think you have a chance - this is your chance.

I'd seriously consider it, however, I'd have to evaluate any time restraints before I tried anything given that I am fairly busy as is. I'll look into it.

The Witch King of Angmar

i definitley got enough time because half my GCSE options dont aquire homework (and no i didnt do that to get no homework i just enjoy the subjects ;))

i got

Physical Education (nope not even theory homework)
ITC (its a joke at my school badly run everythings too easy + no homework
Graphics (hardly ever get any, the lessons also a joke)
Geography (get 1x a week)

all the other core compulsory subjects i get a respectable amount of about 30 mins each day

so i can defintley offer 15+more hours

After the first week has passed, isn't that kind of a moot point?

jap88
11-15-2007, 01:48 PM
Actually, it would mean i would be consistently inconsistent. I would able to put in probably 25 hours the first week and then about 10 the next following that pattern (if sunday is considered the last day of the week) With it being the first i could easily do 15-20 a week.

Darvin
11-15-2007, 02:22 PM
Well, I can't speak for Reverie, but from my perspective if the work is done then that's all that matters.

Doug Bonds
11-15-2007, 03:13 PM
Silly Jap, no matter what day the week begins, there are still 7 days or 168 hours to be dealt with. The only inconsistency is the first week. Hypothetically, say the week starts on Sunday (which appears to be what works for you) and you are brought aboard and work your first day on Friday. That first week is short, but it all works out for the second week. Or, say you intend to put the majority of hours in on the weekend instead of spreading it out by 2 or 3 hours a day, the principle is still the same, i.e. Week starts on Sunday the 18th means that week, your hours would be counted on the 18th and Saturday the 24th. If the week starts Saturday 17th, then your hours would be the 17th and Sunday the 18th. But Darvin is right, as long as the work gets done, all is good.

On second thought, your logic on hours in the week has to make one wonder if you would be the right guy for the job :p j/k

Puppeteer
11-15-2007, 03:28 PM
I get coursework in all 3 of my options subjects (history, geography and ICT (lots of mini's). English I get essays. French and English I get essays and preparations. So yeah my weeks are pretty inconsistent.

jap88
11-15-2007, 04:33 PM
Doug, you know how it works. I'm at my Dad's house from Monday through Monday (1 full week) If the week starts on Sunday I can get quite a few hours in on Sunday at the start of the week and be ok since i can get the rest of the required hours in after school. However if it ends on Sunday this would mean I have only my time after school to get it all in while I'm at my mom's before my Dad picks me up since there is no way I could run, let alone install, it on my dad's comp.

So basically Sunday = week start. 1 day at my mother's house, and then 6 days at my dad's, I can get a lot of time done on that sunday and the rest 2 hour chunks after school most likely. However if the week ends on Sunday I would have a week that would severly limit my time because I wouldn't be able to do anything on Saturday or Sunday. A Sunday start is the make or break for me being able to being able to put in 15 hours a week if i decide to do so. During my Dad's week i put in most of my time on Sunday and after school. During my mom's weeks I put in most of my time after school and on Saturday.
So basically one week with both weekend days to work, and the next week with none, or both weeks with one weekend day.

And Doug, you know all that information already, I really don't see why you couldn't figure that out. Perhaps you needed a refresher.

The only other way I could see it working is if I was able to put in extra hours one week so I could do less the next.
